What is the SET Exam?

The state eligibility test (SET) is a state level examination in india that qualifies candidates for the role of assistant professor in colleges and universities within that particular state. Each state organizes its own version of the exam like MH-SET in Maharashtra, AP-SET in Andhra Pradesh, TS-SET in Telangana and so on.

UGC NET is a national level exam recognized across india, whereas the SET is conducted by individual states and is valid only for teaching positions within that specific state. While both exams share similar syllabus and exam patterns, the key difference lies in their geographical scope and recognition.

Yes, you can apply for SET exams in multiple states. If you meet each state’s eligibility criteria. Just keep in mind that the exam dates might overlap, so be sure to check the schedules and plan.

You must have s Master’s degree in social work (or related field) with at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories). Each state might have slight variations in age or category rules, so check the official notification.

  • Paper 1 : General aptitude (teaching, research, reasoning etc.)
  • Paper 2 : Subject specific (social work)

Both papers are conducted on the same day. All questions are MCQ based and there is no negative marking.

Most states conduct the SET exam once a year. For instance, MH-SET is usually scheduled around march or April. Since each state sets its own timeline, its important to regularly check the official website of the respective state’s exam authority for updates.

There’s no upper age limit to appear for the SET if you are aiming for an assistant professor position. However, certain states might have age restrictions for specific categories or fellowship related benefits, so it’s a good idea to check the detailed guidelines provided by the state exam authority.

Not at all, many candidates successfully crack the SET exam through dedicated self-study using reliable books and past question papers. That said, coaching can be helpful if you are looking for structured guidance, expert tips, and regular mock test practice. It really depends on your learning style and comfort level.

In most cases, yes – the SET exam follows the same syllabus as the UGC NET. However, a few states might include some state specific topics. As for difficulty, its generally on par with UGC NET, thought it can vary slightly depending on the state conducting the exam.

There is no restrictions on the number of attempts. You can take the SET exam as many times as you like, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria each time you apply.

Once you qualify, your SET certification is valid for a lifetime. It serves as permanent eligibility for assistant professor positions within the state where you cleared the exam.
